Goldfish or Frog

Psychological audience survey results

This survey has been carried out since September 2001 on a wide range of audiences including those attending gigs of:
  All About Eve
  Fairport Convention
  annA rydeR
  annA rydeR banD

and including these areas:
  Burton-On-Trent
  Nottingham
  Wales
  Oswestry
  Germany
  Australia
  Newcastle
  Darlington
  Sevenoaks
  Dorking

The audiences were asked if faced with the decision of saving either a goldfish or a frog and you could only save one and the other definitely died (unfortunately) which one would you save ?

It was found that the majority of audiences said frog. However there was always a very small proportion of people who said goldfish, ranging from .03% to 15%.

Exceptions to this were Burton-On-Trent where the audience overwhelmingly said horse, Darlington where only one person said goldfish and no-one else said anything, Port Fairy Australia where there were a higher percentage of goldfish (32.4%) but the frog percentage was higher still (46.7%), Saulgau Germany where no-one understood the question and so just looked blank.

The longest duration of spontaneous audience discussion was at Banbury. The lowest was at Burton-On-Trent.

The results of the survey clearly demonstrate a higher percentage of frogs yet a persistent and significant minority of goldfish.

Reasons given were many and diverse:

Reasons for choosing frog

Reasons for choosing goldfish

  • if you kiss a frog it changes into a prince\princess
  • you can eat a frog
  • a frog is higher up on the evolutionary scale
  • a frog is more interesting
  • frogs are amphibians
  • frogs have legs
  • goldfish can be pets
  • you can eat a goldfish
  • a goldfish is sweet
  • a goldfish is prettier
  • goldfish are fish
  • a goldfish could be really big and would make a bigger meal than the biggest frog and would taste better

In Conclusion

The upshot is that people who say goldfish are always a bit dodgy but not so you'd notice at first. This is a good way of finding out as the goldfish people tend to think everyone will shout goldfish and so they shout it out and then realise halfway through shouting it out that everyone else is saying frog and they realise they have said goldfish perhaps a bit too loud as their girlfriend or boyfriend or family is looking at them a bit strange.
